Equipment: Learners must bring their own laptop. We will provide support with software installation and setup.

Course Summary: To introduce learners to the fundamentals of game design and development using Unity, building practical skills in programming, level design, and interactive storytelling while developing a complete, playable game over the course of the year.

TERM 1 — Foundations of Game Design

Learners will get set up with Unity and the C# environment, and explore core game design principles including mechanics, player experience, and level layout. By the end of term, they will have built a simple 2D game prototype, understanding scenes, Game objects, and basic scripting.

TERM 2 — Programming & Interactivity

Learners will deepen their C# scripting skills, introducing player movement, collisions, scoring systems, and UI elements. They will iterate on their prototypes, adding game logic, sound, and visual polish, working towards a more complete and playable build.

TERM 3 — Refinement & Showcase

Learners will focus on refining their games, debugging, balancing gameplay, and adding final art and audio touches to prepare a polished project for presentation. They will also prepare a short pitch/demo of their game ready for showcase.

In Term 3 (May or June 2027), learners will have the opportunity to showcase their projects at our Family Tech Day and participate in the 123Robot® Competition, celebrating their achievements with family and friends.

Important: The course is designed to be taken from the beginning of a block, as each session builds on previous learning. Learners joining mid-block may need to complete additional work at home to catch up. Regular attendance is recommended to get the most from the programme and successfully complete projects.
